Police weren't sure on the details of what caused the dispute between two cooks at the Wendy's on South Road Friday afternoon, but they knew the result: one pulled a knife on the other and threatened to stab him.
Derron Christopher Cooke, 25, of Sisson Avenue in Hartford, was charged with attempted second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, threatening and breach of peace for allegedly pulling out a folding knife and threatening to stab his colleague.

For all of his celebrity, Mr. Beck is an ignorant, divisive, pathetic figure. On the anniversary of the great 1963 March on Washington he will stand in the shadows of giants — Abraham Lincoln and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Who do you think is more representative of this nation?
Consider a brief sampling of their rhetoric:
Lincoln: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
King: “Never succumb to the temptation of becoming bitter.”
Beck: “I think the president is a racist.”

A malware-laden flash drive inserted in a laptop at a U.S. military base in the Middle East in 2008 led to the "most significant breach of" the nation's military computers ever, according to a new magazine article by a top defense official.
The malware uploaded itself to the U.S. Central Command network and spread undetected on classified and unclassified computers creating a "digital beachhead, from which data could be transferred to servers under foreign control," William J. Lynn III, U.S. deputy secretary of defense, wrote in his essay in the September/October issue of Foreign Affairs.

The founder of the small software company Coding Robots was shocked when he found out that one of his works had been cracked and shared on The Pirate Bay. However, instead of asking The Pirate Bay to remove the torrent the company’s founder did quite the opposite. He sent a ‘Notice of Ridiculous Activity’ because the crack didn’t live up to his expectations.

Critic Scott Foundas characterized "The Social Network" as a "portrait of a self-made outsider marking his territory in the WASP jungle" akin to F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic "The Great Gatsby," and speculated that it may come to be considered a microcosm of the Digital Age in the same way that "Gatsby" encapsulates the Jazz Age.

Pianist Liu Wei sits quietly to compose himself before plunging into the music. Then he takes off a sock.

Robots have transformed the way the U.S. military fights wars. Ground-based bomb disposal robots in particular have saved many lives by disarming improvised explosive devices. But these machines require a human operator to carry out their tasks, which can be made more difficult due to communications bandwidth issues to remote control units and limited fields of view.
To make robots more flexible in battlefield situations, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has launched the Autonomous Robotic Manipulation program.
Real-life Robot Wars? Awesomesauce!

The brothers first heard about Duffy's Cut from their grandfather, a railroad worker, who told the ghost story to his family every Thanksgiving. According to local legend, memorialized in a file kept by the Pennsylvania Railroad, a man walking home from a tavern reported seeing blue and green ghosts dancing in the mist on a warm September night in 1909.

A Stephens College alumna has promised to give her alma mater $1-million, with one weighty condition: Employees of the women's college in Columbia, Mo., must lose a total of 250 pounds by the stroke of midnight on January 1.
And if the college's president, Dianne M. Lynch, sheds at least 25 pounds, the donor will add $100,000 to her gift.

All this talk about the mosque reminds me of two things I heard growing up in Nebraska.
I had a 6th grade teacher who referred to American Indians as “sneaky redskins” and our enemies in the Pacific as “dirty Japs.” This abated somewhat after I asked one day in class, “Mrs. G., do you think our parents would like to know that you teach race prejudice?” She faded three shades.
The rest of that year was difficult.

In the middle of the Libyan Desert’s scorched yellow sands, rows of green grapes dangle off vines; almond trees blossom in neat lines, and pear tree orchards stretch into the distance. Libya is one of the driest countries on Earth, bereft of rivers, lakes, and rain. But here the desert is blooming.

A traffic jam on China's Beijing-Tibet Expressway that started nine days ago is still going strong, stretching over 60 miles. Drivers are playing cards on the road, and some have suggested holding concerts to entertain stranded motorists. 60 miles!

If we've learned nothing else about investment banking over the last two years, we've learned that it operates like a virus. You can devise all sorts of economic antibiotics but sooner or later they are all bound to fail because financial instruments keep mutating to escape destruction. Investment bankers reconstitute highly risky, highly profitable schemes such as credit default swaps or unit contingent options or other exotic inventions. That's why reform never works. It will always be outsmarted.

For drums, the title track rules over this album. Really a beautifully written and performed piece of music overall and Steve Gadd just nails it home. The beat he goes into at the very end may be the best Steely Dan moment of all time.

there is no way the best steely dan moment of all time is on this album, imo
― iatee, Tuesday, September 1, 2009 4:11 AM
So what's the best Steely Dan moment then?
