Algebra and Software Programming - what are the chances a person can make a living as a programmer if that person is not good at algebra?

Zero.
Might be able to fake it if they have a good enough development environment.
It's possible, the mental skills overlap is not that strong.

'Baby Einstein' Makes Your Spud Dumberer blinded by science
Link #131709 submitted by FuzzyDave on Aug 7, 2007 06:11pm.   (+680XP)

Parents hoping to raise baby Einsteins by using infant educational videos are actually creating baby Homer Simpsons, according to a new study released today.

For every hour a day that babies 8 to 16 months old were shown such popular series as "Brainy Baby" or "Baby Einstein," they knew six to eight fewer words than other children, the study found.

Parents aiming to put their babies on the fast track, even if they are still working on walking, each year buy hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of the videos.

Unfortunately it's all money down the tubes, according to Dr. Dimitri Christakis, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington in Seattle.

I'm betting that they would do the same as a control that watched cartoons or most anything else. There is no substitute for human interaction and these tapes are just one more way of having a baby sitter in house so the parents can watch Becker.

Not just tapes...

The Baby Einstein empire (if you will) is composed of much more than videos. The toys they offer seem very educational. Bebbibot has all of ONE Baby Einstein video (which he's adamantly refused to watch - ever-) but multiple toys from this line. Making him smarter? I don't know, but they seem like cool toys.

Then there's teh self selection factor...

pn2 never expressed any interest in watching the Baby Einstein vids that would inevitably pop up in his play group. Now he's teh best reader in his school. That said, there is no way to draw the conclusion that he's smarter because he didn't watch the vids. Maybe he didn't watch the vids because he was too smart for them..?

/me loves those videos

My son did NOT want to watch baby einsteins. But when he was I think 8 mos old we put him in front of "elmo in grouchland" and he watched it 10 times a day for well over a year.

8 to 16 months old

Why the hell would someone put a 16 month old child in front of this? These tapes are for babies. Drooling 3-6 month old babies. Look! Shiny!

My kid could talk at that age. I think putting these on for him would've insulted his intelligence.
