You know you've made it big when Metafilter takes the time to say 'you suck!' Congrats to everybody here at Linkfilter.
"that makes my eyes hurt."
"this site is a revolving door of the same links... it is a rare occasion when a quality link is found..."
"It certainly is difficult to read."

Closed "community"
|
|
Posted by mGee

I just replaced metafilter with linkfilter in my browser's link bar. I've waited forever for metafilter to open up registration again.... all the while realizing that their closed "community" is a very narrow-minded one and wish to remain so.
I come here to linkfilter and immediately noticed that the links are more interesting and posts occur more often. I was also able to register immediately and post this comment.

I've got a spare Mefi logon which you can have for $10 (or, alternatively, if you promise to be my friend). Want it?

Thanks... but I'm all set. I'm not really interested in being a member of that community now... but I appreciate the offer.

Q: How do you know a Metafiter-ite has been in your yard?
A: Your garbage cans are empty and your dog is pregnant.

Linkfilter - tastes great, less filling!

For what it's worth, I visit linkfilter more often than I visit metafilter. Metafilter's "links embedded in overly verbose paragraphs" style tendency often makes it hard to figure out what the post is about, unlike linkfilter which posts the link up front with the description following it.
Then again, the sites only overlap a bit in terms of purpose - metafilter makes a statement and uses links to support it. Linkfilter makes a link and uses statements to explain it.

I visit both as well. They are very different sites considering they effectively do the same thing: Provide links.
I hope we are adult enough to not let a few peoples bad opinion of this site upset us and I expect metafilter to be the same.

metafilter is full of crusty curmudgeons, and i ought to know. it's also full of wannabe web designers who ALWAYS say stuff like "ow! my eyes!". i recommend snarks regarding mathowies mom having painted his crib #006699. now, settle down and enjoy a link or two, courtesy of blort.

This thread reminds me of this quote from futurama:
Bender: Fry's in trouble and he needs help. Now, I don't like you and you don't like me.
Leela [on phone]: I like you.
Bender: You do?

I see alot of link sites

and I also take part in them I admit I am a link junky. You might also see me posting under the name Larfus on zfilter alot. I haven't really visited metafilter enough to post comments if I like it or not, but I find the community that linkfilter has is pretty cool. we all have different views and most of us are open to those views. I enjoy greeting people in the chatter box and taking part in our theme days. I hope linkfilter can stay this way for years to come. As far as revolving door of links go all the E/N sites have repeat links. I can watch a link from zfilter travel across many blogs in the matter of days or even hours. Not all readers visit the same blogs so its going to be new to others and a repeat to people like me that bounce around the sites.

Well it used to be much more linky, these days it's a bit of an English major pissing contest for the most part, and it definitely has evolved a political stance which in the past wasn't as self evident. It's still good on occasion though. My only fear with this place is that people are encouraged to post inane comments (kinda like this one) in order to gain CPs, could bump up the noise.

memepool used to be my link source of choice, before I really got into LF. I still check it once or twice a day, and I try to post there, but it's really languished. It now takes days for one of my links to get reviewed and posted. It used to be hours. And there are days in a row with no posts at all. Sad.

I would like to take a moment to say 'OMGHI2U' to MetaFilter ... I've never been able to get a user account there, but can't imagine what good would come of it anyway.
As a MeFi voyeur over the years, I've seen it at it's best and worst. While it can be predictable (good luck finding a thread Quonsar hasn't pooped on), it's still one of the best sites on the intarweb.
I, for one, welcome our crusty curmudgeon over ... ahh nevermind.
