''Public Citizen'' Gets Pemoline Discontinued In US health
Link #102978 submitted by kingskyprawn on Jan 4, 2006 10:15am.   (+230XP)
http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/007140.html#007140
If you use pemoline ( brand names Cylert, PemADD, Betanamin, Tradon ) to treat ADHD, narcolepsy or multiple sclerosis, you should know that the US manufacturers of the drug have discontinued production under direction from the FDA. Above normal rates of liver damage are cited as the reason, but the pressure to discontinue the drug came mainly from Ralph Nader's " Public Citizen" advocacy group.

I've linked to a blog entry of Teresa Nielsen Hayden, an editor at Tor Books. She suffers from narcolepsy and is directly affected by the absence of this drug.

Did the FDA do right? Should it have been left to physicians and patients to decide what risks to take with the medicine? Some other option?

Link #92868 submitted by beaglebot on Aug 31, 2005 12:01am.   (+150XP)
http://www.ohgizmo.com/2005/08/29/bosh-ebs-no-more-dead-car-batteries
Bosch has developed an electronic battery sensor (EBS) designed to monitor a battery's current and future performance levels (by measuring the temperature, current and voltage) which prevents vehicle breakdowns associated with depleted and near-depleted batteries.

I remeber an aftermarket add on you could get afive to ten years ago that pretty much did this, why'd it take so long

Governor's Proposed Homeland Security Bill Under Fire
"Legislation intended to strengthen the state's security measures drew criticism from a civil rights group that said the proposed law threatens free speech and academic freedom."

"The bill, which Carcieri introduced last week, also resurrects World War I-era laws that make it illegal to "speak, utter, or print'' statements in support of anarchy; speak in favor of overthrowing the government; or to display "any flag or emblem other than the flag of the United States'' as symbolic of the U.S. government."

Wow. I already feel safer.

The World's first hypoallergenic cats have gone on sale in the US, pleasing pet lovers who are prone to the sniffles.
Researchers promise the cats will not cause the red eyes, sneezing and even asthma that some cat allergy sufferers experience, except in the most acute cases.
There is already a waiting list for the cuties, despite them carrying a hefty $3,950 (£2,100) price tag.

University of Minnesota college student Chris Jenkins was found in the Mississippi River in February of 2003. Minneapolis Police began investigating the case, which also caught the attention of two retired NYPD detectives. Turns out, Jenkins' death was the missing part of the puzzle for Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte. They think Jenkins connects dozens of other deaths around the country over the last decade. The stories are the same all over the country--an athletic, intelligent, well-liked college student goes missing. Because of extensive investigation by Duarte and Gannon, Jan Jenkins now says she knows exactly what happened to her son on the night he disappeared, Oct. 31, 2002. "Chris was abducted in a cargo van," she said. "He was driven around Minneapolis for hours and tortured. He was taken down to the Mississippi River and he was murdered. And after that, his body was positioned and taken to a different spot and then to a different point in the Mississippi River." Gannon and Duarte say they've discovered a link between Jenkins' death and the drownings of at least 40 other men in 25 cities in 11 different states.

These detectives believe there are multiple organized murder rings or clubs across the country that are in contact with each other in some way, a serial killer ring if you will. ...... Watch all the video pieces...This is deeply disturbing. The local media is reporting this will begin to hit the National media in the next few days. This is apparently the beginning of a media push to raise awareness of this case because more young men are at risk.

The pensions minister will today pledge a white paper on plans to boost retirement savings through "personal accounts" for up to 10 million employees.

In a speech to industry, James Purnell will confirm that due to the significance of the proposed reforms the government will go further than the "technical paper" previously expected.
