I called it!
Good bye Chloe.
Posted by Horpy SpoonDigger 9 years ago
Today we lost a four legged member of our family. Chloe had been with us for 16 years. She was truly an awesome pet, loyal friend and loved by everyone. We will miss her dearly.

Cats and other animals often come and go on a farm. It's part of nature. However sometimes a special animal comes along and steals your heart. One that is smarter, more charismatic, more intuitive and bonds with people in ways that other animals do not. Chloe was one of those special creatures.

I feel privileged that my life was enriched by her love and companionship. She was an enormous presence wrapped in a diminutive package.

You will be missed.

The last couple of days I've noticed some visitors to my yard. Every time I go outside I see and hear a pair of wood ducks flushing from somewhere in my yard. I couldn't figure out why these 2 wood ducks were repeatedly visiting my yard. Well today during lunch I figured it out. They are nesting in a tree about 8 feet from my deck!

I'm going to have to get some pictures!

I received an email from my Uncle last night. His Kidney's are failing him and he needs a kidney transplant. I had talked to him about a month ago and told him if he needed a kidney to let me know. Originally he indicated that he had other donors lined up so I didn't give it another thought.

In his email last night he inquired if I was still willing to donate? I got the impression he's getting nervous that maybe he won't be a match with one of the other donors. The enormity of the situation began to sink in while I sat in front of my monitor reading his email. If he askes me to get tested to see if I'm a match this may be a life changing event. I began to mull over all of my concerns. Then my thoughts turned to what my Uncle must be thinking. My fears instantly seemed selfish and were overpowered by the reality that whatever I'm feeling must pale in comparison to his fears. He's the one facing his own mortality. I could not say no to him. It wouldn't be right. If one of my kidneys is the diference between his life or death then I'll give it to him.

It was at that moment my wife asked me what I was reading. She can always sense when something is serious. She's only met my uncle a couple of times and those encounters only amounted to a chat over a cup of coffee. I told her the whole story. All she said was, "I'm the same blood type as he is, tell him I'll get tested too". Without even a Hesitation.

I here a giant ruckus coming from the other room. I find my oldest son laughing hysterically at this guy on the TV jumping around like an idiot. The guy on the tv looks like a cross between a retro futuristic 70's pimp and a Drum Major. The scene on the tv has terrified my youngest son who is sitting on the couch crying at the sight of this thing on tv. This only increases my oldest sons amusement.

I stand there watching this for a moment trying to comprehend what I'm seeing. Then 2 small girls wearing dresses and patent leather shoes role across the scene while stradling and riding a GIANT CARROT!! This show is apparently called YO GABBA GABBA. .

I have no comment for this. I hope you do.
The slim fast diet.
Posted by Horpy SpoonDigger 10 years ago
I had originally posted the pics of Slim eating. Despite the fact you can see the same thing every night of the week on Animal planet or the National Geographic channel, I've decided they may not be for the faint of heart. If you wish to see the pics the link is below.

Slim eats a rat
Babysitting SLIM.
Posted by Horpy SpoonDigger 10 years ago
The science teacher at the school where my wife teaches was in dire need of a sitter for his snake. The snake who's name is slim normally resides in the science classroom at school.

The science teacher is moving schools and will not be moving into his new classroom until the end of the summer. His wife is deathly afraid of snakes and forbid slim from setting foot.....well...from setting belly in their house. So Slim is bunking with us until he can move into her new proper home with the science students. Slim is a female Royal Python or commonly called a Ball Python. She's almost 3 years old and just under (a very stout) 4 feet long. She should be around 5 feet long at full maturity.

My son is absolutely thrilled that Slim is visiting. He's 7 years old and a budding herpetologist/Biologist. If it slithers, crawls or walks he's interested. It's not uncommon for him to round up several garter snakes on our farm in an afternoon. Slim's visit has been a great educational experience for him so far. It's amazing to me how fast he's grasped the concept that there is a drastic difference between a domesticated animal and wild animal in captivity.

Anyway enough about that. Slim will only eat live animals and.........she's showing all the classic signs of being hungry. Let's just say Slim isn't content lately. So we plan on feeding her a medium size rat tonight within the next couple hours. Ball pythons are nocturnal. So would anyone like to see some pics of slim or her meal the rat or would anyone like to see a pic of them together in a group photo as it were?
A story that made this soldier cry.

You must speed test.
Posted by Horpy SpoonDigger 10 years ago
I've been enduring agonizing internet slow down now for months now. It seems every night my bandwith seems to utterly disappear for at least a couple hours. It took me about 30 minutes to conduct a speedtst. I ended up with 27kbps download and 347kbps upload. My tubes 'r clogged! My 5 cats must have got stuck in the tube again.

I couldn't take it anymore. I gave up on my desktop pc. I broke out the laptop and headed for the Dmarc. The way my house is wired I can bypass all my in house wiring at the J box and plug my modem directly into the Dmarc. The phone line which is a relatively heavy black cable comes into my house via underground and through a small hole in the cinderblock in my laundry room. It's wired to a standard phone jack which in turn has a connector wire connecting it to my house Jbox. So I can simply disconnect the Jbox and plug in my modem and viola, I've bi-passed all of my in house wiring.

Being an analyst in the IT field I have some idea how to troubleshoot problems and speak to any telco tech in their own language. Some of what I do is network related. I think that helped a lot. The repair tech was willing to work with me once she realized I was connected directly to their Dmarc, well extended Dmarc. Technically the Dmarc is in a green box in the ditch next to the road access at the end of my driveway. However I was connected to the 50 run of telco line that attatches into the Dmarc and it's only used for my property. I had essentially already ruled out my pc, in house wiring and my LAN.

I gave her the tracert info and she had me do some random ping tests and she in turn verified a few things from her end. I told her my theory. I think I have a bandwith hog somewhere down the road from me. I have visions of some punk kid getting all hopped up on W.O.W. while simultaneously downloading volumes of movies in a bittorent frenzy. I have so few neighbors out here it would probably be more effective for me to just start knocking on doors until I find the offending squirt and tell him to stop it.

Well I suggested to her the best way to get to the bottom of this would be to schedule a sniffer on the line out here between 2000hrs and 2300hrs at least a couple nights this week. That went officially right over her head. Thankfully she said she will pass the ticket to one of the local techs at my C.O. (central office). She took down my cell and said the tech will call me in the morning and he can set up a sniffer. I've got your number captain download! I think my next entry should be titled: HELP! I'M IN POWER STEERING PUMP HELL!

Captain Download must be done with his nightly pirating because my teh innnernets is back up and purring at 3mbps.

Canoeing.
Posted by Horpy SpoonDigger 10 years ago
I returned 10 days ago from my latest canoe trip into the BWCA. I was able to take some good pics. However I was fortunate enough to come across a pair of nesting loons. The diligent mother and father to be made their nest not too far from my campsite. I've come across loon's nests before but never one this exposed. They were very trusting and would often come over and play, call, fish and dance on the water in front of my campsite. They allowed us get fairly close to them as long as you were quite. They were not however as accepting to the bald eagles nesting nearby. One of the eagles liked to sit on a high tree limb that was outstretched across the water on a point that was very close and within site of the Loon's nest. It was a very good fishing spot. The loons would wail nonstop at the eagle until it would leave.

What a fantastic trip! Spectacular scenery as always and majestic wildlife. I always feel blessed when I'm allowed a glimpse into their world. Inevitably the day always comes when I am reminded that I am but a visitor to their home and must return to mine. I thank them for being such gracious hosts.

I especially thank that large black bear who lived across the bay from me. Although you came down to the shores edge every morning at dawn you never once felt the need to come over and tear the hell out of my camp. Which is more than I can say for some of your relatives behavior on previous visits. Thank you.

I was able to get quite a few photos of them but these are the best ones.

This is my paradise
Posted by Horpy SpoonDigger 11 years ago
This photo was taken just around the corner from an area I have named "God's living room". I gave it such a name because it has remained unaltered by man since it's creation. No buildings, no roads, no electricity, no planes flying overhead, no billboards. It was created by mother nature alone. A beautiful untouched boreal forest on planet earth. It is my special place.

Happy New Year
Posted by Horpy SpoonDigger 11 years ago
February 9th 2006 11:45pm --- I sat in a chair next to my mothers bed. It had been 4 days since she had lost consciousness. The last time she ever spoke to me was on February 5th. On the day she barely opened her eyes as she ever so slightly turned her head towards me. she cleared her throat and asked, "who won the superbowl?". It was Superbowl sunday that day. "The Steelers won mom", I replied. "Oh good, your sister will be happy." she said. My sister has always been a huge steelers fan. "She is" I said. "Oh good......I'm sorry but I can't talk, I have to sleep..I love you." She said. "I love you too mom". I squeezed her hand tight as she drifted back out of consciousness.

She deteriorated badly those last 4 days. until the 9th when she lay there emaciated, her skin seeming to be on fire it was so hot. I sat there holding her hand tight and looking at her. Her jaw was unhumanly slack causing her mouth to be agape as she slay flat on her back. Her body racked with cancer and dehydration. She didn't even resemble my mother anymore. She had built up a huge tolerance to morphine in the last month. She was currently full of enough of the drug to kill a large animal if it was given the same dosage cold turkey. I Knew full well that this would be the last time I would ever see her.

The weekly commuter flights from Minneapolis to Phoenix had taken a toll on me and my pocketbook over the last 2 months. I had been spending long days at work and then racing to the airport to spend the rest of the week at her side. Hoping not to miss anytime she may have remaining. I knew it was over now. I knew I wouldn't be making another trip. I had a plane to catch. I had to go to work and my family needed me back home.

I held her hand tight. I kissed her forhead and wispered in her ear. "Mom, I have to go now mom. You know I don't want to but I have to go. It's time for me to catch my flight. I want you know it's okay for you to go now too. You can't stay here anymore. Your body is falling apart. It's time for you to leave us and go and live with god. We'll take care of dad, I promise. I love you mom. I love you..good bye.

My flight landed and I called back to Phoenix right away. There was nothing to report. Only a few hours later I received the call at home. My mom died with my dad and my two sisters by her side, February 10th 2007, one year ago today.

That is when the year 2006 changed for me. I don't even really remember New years day 2006. But I remember February 10th.

BUMPUSES!!!!!!

So this is what currently remains of my mailbox. Courtesy of the county snow plow driver. When I found it's shattered carcass in the ditch I was STEAMED! Our mailbox has met destruction the last 3 winters in a row. Will this never end? After a drunken moron flattened it last winter I decided to take action(it had already been destroyed by the plow once that winter). I propped up the mailbox for the remainder of last winter and vowed to move it to the other side of the road come spring.

I hoped the postal "CHI" would be better on the other side of the road. After getting the okey dokey from the post office last spring, I cemented in a 4x4 post and moved the mailbox. I adorned the mailbox (as you can clearly see) with enough reflective tape to make a highway construction crew blush. I figured It was all ready for the snowplow season. (note the rusted battle scars on the mailbox. This is from were I pounded out previous damage and resurrected it on a new post. Other mailboxes were not as lucky. Most found their final resting place in the trash.)

After today It's now painfully obvious that the Chi is no better on this side of the road. I'm starting to feel like Darren McGavin in a Christmas Story. He had the Bumpuses and their hound dogs and I have a cursed mailbox. At least the plow driver didn't kick down my door and make off with our christmas turkey. So I've got that going for me,....which is nice.

Since I had already scored the proverbial trifecta in mailbox destruction last winter. I wasn't about to take this lying down. As our nations fearless leader "the googler" would say, "Flatten my mailbox once, shame on you! Flatten my mailbox 4 times..and ahhh.......we won't get flattened again!

I mean really! I wasn't about to trying to drive a post in this frozen ground. Why should I have to pay for a new mailbox and/or a post every dam year because the plow driver gets his kicks trying to see how far he can send my mailbox flying.

With this in mind I I'm thinking I should call my county commissioner. After all he lives just down the road so we are neighbors. He should help a neighbor right? I also let him put an election sign on our property. There is also the little thing about him meeting his wife at my wedding. Oh and I almost forgot, his wife is my wife's cousin. Not to mention our families spend every christmas together and we're good friends. I'm thinking if this isn't an inside track then such a thing doesn't exist.

So I gave him a call tonight. For the sake of the story we'll call him Clerm Ningledibber. I tell Clerm the whole mailbox story of woe. I asked him if he knows what county office I should send the bill to because I thought my mailbox being hit this many times was a bit ridiculous and I wasn't about to foot the bill again.

Clerm chuckled a bit and said, "you've been replacing your mailbox yourself?"

"well yeah, why?" I said.

"You know the county has a bunch of mailboxes and posts on hand for just this sort of thing?." He says still kinda half chuckling.

"ahh I didn't know that" I reply

He then tells me that if the plow demolishes a mailbox the county has to replace it. He said they actually budget for it. The replacement is done by the county department that puts up road signs. Clerm says, "I'll call Gerglebutz, he's the manager of the department. They'll be out in the morning to put up a new mailbox for you".

I dedicate this story to Champthom.

Who flipped the winter switch?
Posted by Horpy SpoonDigger 11 years ago
Okay so on Wednesday of this week it was 74 degrees. I had the windows to the house open all day. Absolutely glorious. When I went to bed late on Thursday, actually it was about 1am all was well just a little cooler than Wednesday. When I woke up yesterday we were were buried in snow. We went from 74 and sunny to full blown winter. So I drive to work this morning. When I get to St. Paul there isn't even a flake of snow on the ground. When I get to work Ss confirmed he has no snow in his yard either. He was a bit confused about all these people calling and telling him they were delayed due to weather.

A few Photo's of the snow at my place. (The blurry house in the distance in not my house, It's a neighbor's place about 400-500 yards away. The zoom just makes it seem closer)

Who's that Person?
Posted by Horpy SpoonDigger 11 years ago
The other day I was watching a documentary about the life a truly remarkable person. Everyone who witnessed him doing his thing declared he was the most naturally gifted in the field they had ever scene. He was marveled at by fellow professionals who all knew he Possessed a level of skill a cut above their own. He won national accolades and was revered. Yet he is not a household name. At the time of his death it barely made the news.7

I got to thinking how it's often not always the best and brightest who become the most famous in their field. Well to honor the overshadowed greats I thought I'd start a little game.
