Eh.. I got nothing in the way of weekend pictures. Saturday was too hazy for a good hike, Montserrat was acting up again, so I figured why bother.

I ended up taking a swim and grabbing some sun at Sandy Point, and then got piss drunk at the Domino Club, went home and went to sleep.

Sunday was even less eventful. The morning started off rainy, so I took that as my excuse not to hike down to Jack's and get pictures. I ended up chugging down some beers and a BBQ sammich while I watched football all day.

Meh.

Me @ Sandy point.

The fruit we used to cover each other in 'war paint' at the Domino Club. Yeah.. that drunk.

Haha.. it's almost 11pm(ast) on Sunday.. that means Dexter!

Six Feet Under's Michael C. Hall is still dealing with death, just in a different way. In this adaptation of Jeff Lindsay's novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter," Hall stars as a forensics pathologist who moonlights as a serial killer.

I don't watch much TV, in fact, almost no TV.. but I'm hooked as shit on this show.

Woke up at the crack of 10am this morning, had a wake-and-bake, grabbed my camera, a beer and bottle of water. Decided to go out and see a beach I haven't visited in forever, Issacs. The beach is usually a bitch of a hike to get down to, but this trip was significantly more difficult. In years past, the hike down had been a dry, dusty and rocky path over a beach and two big hills. To my surprise, the dry path down is absolutely overgrown with vegetation. The abundance of rain this year is really evident on the hike.

The Nature Conservancy has apparently been active on my beach. Markings are everywhere indicating that Issacs, Jacks and other beaches around the area are protected turtle nesting beaches. These folks do great job caring for the animals and keeping the place clean.

The Nature Conservancy's Work @ Issacs & Jacks

An obscenely windy day on St. Croix. Normally calm beaches on the north and east shores look like this.

Plants on what is a normally dry rocky path. The air is sickly sweet with the smell of those little blue flowers.

Giant grape tree plants have sprung up just off a beach, where there were none before. Oh, and a lovely nest of very aggressive jack spaniard wasps that I managed to disturb : (

Choppy.

The walk just to get this shot was a pain. There's a stiff, constant 40mph breeze of air coming off the cliffs. A large gust managed to knock me off my feet and on my ass a second or two after the shot.

I don't have the foggiest what type of cactus it is, but the little hot pink fruits on it make the trip worth it. They're crunchy, sweet and probably not poisonous. I've eaten dozens on multiple trips with no ill effects.

Signage!

Finally, after 30 minutes of hiking, the reason I came, Issacs!

Somebody built a shelter.. poachers.. sunburned tourists.. bored locals.. who knows.

Time to take a dip and lime.

The walk home... uhhh.

The painful results of a centipede bite have been well known for centuries. In 1740, the English naturalist Charles Owen wrote, "The Scolopendra is a small venomous worm, and amphibious. When it wounds any, there follows a Blueness about the affected Part, and an Itche all over the Body, like that caused by Nettles. Its Weapons of Mischief are much the same as those of the Spider, only much larger; its Bite is very tormenting, and produces not only pruriginous Pain in the Fleshe, but very often Distractions of the Minde."

Got bitten again tonight. Yay. If that's 1740 speak for 'hurts like having a hot nail driven through your foot for the next 6 hours' then I agree.

Apparently some stupid fuckers are keeping these things as pets. I don't get it. I can't keep them out of my house and some assholes are paying to welcome them in.

We live in a world that accepts American hip-hop as authentic but American reggae as flaccid. Sort of like looking for french fries in Chinatown--sure you can find it, but it's not the best, so why bother? American reggae has had a hard time finding an international audience that deem their music as authentic and as real as Marley, Tosh, or Beenie Man. There are subtle yet reinforced reminders that only real reggae comes from Jamaica, and no other place has the ability to produce talent that competes with the homegrown originals of Jamaican music. The charts, DJs and journalists constantly remind us of whose riddim and whose song is #1 in Jamaica. The award shows always hone in on strictly Jamaican reggae artists and therefore omit a great market and talent that is out there, pumping out great reggae music just the same. The time has come, for the many who thought only good authentic reggae comes from Jamaica-- to bite their tongues.

"Time is not counted from daylight, but from Midnite"

As an avid listener of reggae music, I am certain and definite when I hear true reggae that is thought provoking, heartfelt, and just damn good. It has been said that not everyone can play reggae, and I truly agree with that--it takes a certain vibration and sensibility to get the rhythms and timing right. Many times American bands lack the complete formula to provide consistent and full music and this can leave audiences limp. After all, many average bands have to avert to Marley tunes in between their own to keep the momentum. There is a need to keep covers on their playlists or their albums. For once I have come across a band who uses no filler, no derivatives and no covers to create an original sound of their own, and the St. Croix-based Midnite is that band.

Midnite's sound has many Jamaicans wondering what parish are they from, and if they are not from Jamaica, then how dem a do it? How did they capture reggae so profoundly? A lot of that detail comes through in Midnite's steadfastly strong lyrical content with smooth yet simplistic melodies. Their message is clearly Rastafarian, and their devotion to spreading that message is firm and musically inspirational. They delve deep into subjects that are specific to these times and can address the distinct social problems of today. To complete their formula, they encompass heavy use of drum and bass patterns that are - reminiscent of the 70s classic period keeping a harmonious weave in their music. As an avid listener, their music is refreshing.

Just wanted to share some good tunes with you guys. A home-grown roots reggae band from St. Croix. I've seen them quite a few times on the islands as moved from obscurity to arguably the best roots reggae band around.

I'm going to toss up torrents of 3 of their albums that I really like. If you enjoy it and think you want to hear more, please support them. Even if you don't usually dig on the reggae, give it a listen and put a little irie in your day.

As of today I've made the move to switch over my home desktop to Ubuntu linux. I toyed around for a few weeks dual booting between Ubuntu and XP and found myself booting less and less often into my Windows environment with each passing day. I took the files I needed off my Windows install and nuked the drive.

Vista appearing to be nothing but a colossal train wreck prompted me to give linux a fresh try. Frankly, what I've seen from Vista makes me want to puke. I've tried the beta candidate on a test bed system I built and another off the shelf system that's 'Vista Ready.' The installation on each was horrid. I was unable to get Vista working in any capacity on my home built system, and after 3 tries it took on the 'Vista Ready' machine. Unimpressive is the only way I can discribe Vista. It's bloated, sluggish, a terrible resource hog and loaded with DRM content protection. Toss in WGA bullshit and I came to the conclusion that there was no way I would let this run on my home system.

I still, however, wanted a system running on and OS that's going to continue to be developed & cutting edge. Since Microsoft presented me with no viable options beyond continuing to run an old XP install that is already long in the tooth, I fired up Ubuntu.

I had tinkered around with Linux in one capacity or another at home for years, but had different hardware & software problems each time that kept me coming back to Windows. This wasn't the case with Ubuntu. My hardware was 100% functional out of the box. The OS is light, fast and impressive. I hit up their outstanding community forums and found easy answers to help me setup my old software the way I liked it. Gangbusters. I know it sounds like a cheesy commercial, but I really like what they've put together.

The Christian god can easily be pictured as virtually the same god as the many ancient gods of past civilizations. The Christian god is a three headed monster; cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites.

With the ongoing crackdown on BitTorrent tracker sites it's getting harder and harder to find quality torrents.

Orb's Torrent Site Status is a great place to start looking for torrent trackers that are still up and running, but I was wondering what other torrent trackers you Linkfilterites use.

Some of my faves are Pirate Bay, Torrent Reactor, and isoHunt.

My Alma Mater is booting some ass in college basketball this year and I'm pumped to say the least. Last time we were 19-2 was 1998 when we won the National Championship. We slaughtered Georga this afternoon and are looking to go undefeated in the SEC. In my opinion (contrary to all those asshole ESPN analysts) we are going to be a number one seed and hopefully finish regular season #1 three years straight!

"Mr. Speaker, the President of the United States..."

The general rules of this game are no different from any other drinking game. A drink is either a shot or a good gulp from a beer (or cider). Different events call for different numbers of drinks and all you do is watch the speech and play along. If all goes well, you'll be unconscious by the time they show the other party's response.

Fun game, although I honestly don't think I'm going to watch this year. Frankly Bush is one of the poorest and arguably most handicapped public speaker to hold such a high position. I can't stand the stammering, mis-speaking and 'bushisms.'

I've seen Bush's other speeches, and his sensationalistic and self-serving lies aside, it's just a long, drawn out fear-mongering session with lots of patriotic cliches and buzz words thrown in. You know, the old.. blah blah blah LIBERTY! Blah blah blah, evil doers, freedom, justice 9/11 9/11 terrah liberty blah! Coupled with the fact that his lame duck ideas of discrimination against gays and privatization of SS, two things that he knows he doesn't have the votes or support to carry are going to be central themes, I really don't see a reason to watch.

More WASTE stuff....

Everybody that is on and hasn't made the following changes needs to do so.

Under file/preferences/pending keys, I need you to turn on auto-accept.
Under file/preferences/private key, I need you to make sure that you are periodically broadcasting your public key.

After you make those changes, highlight all the IPs in your network status windows and hit the connect icon.

The goal of this is to allow you to directly connect to people to speed up transfers. Right now, if you're only connected to the initial setup address of 66.185.38.4, then your downloads and uploads are being throttled as they have to pass through that static site before they get to other people.

Let me know if you need help/have questions.

If anybody is interested in getting any albums from me, download my mp3 album list (zipped excel file - use OoO or MS' free excel 2003 viewer.) There's 5770 albums, quite a bit of music. If you want me to put any of it on WASTE, just pick out some albums and email me.

World Community Grid's mission is to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects that benefit humanity.

Our work has developed the technical infrastructure that serves as the grid's foundation for scientific research. Our success depends upon individuals collectively contributing their unused computer time to change the world for the better.

World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community.

I'm starting to kick some major ass for glitch's team linkfilter. If you've got CPU cycles to spare, join up! Use your CPU cycles to do something that will actually help humanity instead of searching aliens that simply aren't out there.

So, I finally got broadband, I have some time to kill before I move to the Cayman Islands and I wanted to try one of those mmorpgs. Everybody and their brother is raving about World of Warcraft so I thought I'd try to pick up a copy.

Obviously they aren't going to have it in the Virgin Islands. There's no electrionic stores here, peroid. But you can always pick it up online, right? Welp, no. Much to my suprise, Blizzard's new game has sold out everywhere, brick & mortar and online. Copies are going for $100+ on eBay and there's no way in hell I'm going to cough up that dough.

I guess the official story is that their servers can't handle the number of people playing already, so they've stopped selling the game until they can resolve the issues. No comment on when that is, some speculate that it won't be until late Spring, early Summer.

I'm pissed to say the least. I was really looking forward to pissing away some time with this fun looking little game.

Oh well.
