From February 12 th to 16 th , 2011, Peru will host the III Summit of Heads of State and Government of South American and Arab Countries -ASPA- , as well as the meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs and the meeting of High Level Officials of those countries. The South American countries share, from the roots of their colonial history, many cultural features with the millennial Arab civilization, brought to them by Spanish Conquistadors. The geographic distance and historical ups and downs separated the two areas during the formative period of their respective Nation States. But nowadays these paths converge, as both regions share the same interest for economic development, for the preservation of the environment, and for an intercultural dialogue, as ways and means to consolidate world peace, to which both regions aspire.

Who doesn’t love a city? Lonely Planet has scoured the globe for next year’s hottest cities. Our top picks show that a city doesn’t need to be a heaving metropolis to get on the list. Then again, sometimes it helps. One of our favourites is the world’s largest city that cannot be reached by road. And there are even a couple of European cities that remain criminally underrated. Here they are, Lonely Planet’s top 10 cities for next year, ranked in order:

6. Iquitos
After days forging by boat along rainforest-fringed rivers, Iquitos, mighty megalopolis of the Peruvian Amazon, comes as a shock to the system. Pulsating with life, the city’s latest boom is tourism: visitors may flock to reconnoitre the rainforest but taking time to imbibe Iquitos itself is imperative too.

Latin America has become ‘normal’. On our first tour there in 1994, in each country the promoter met us at the airport gate and whisked us straight into a car, customs formalities apparently nonexistent. Fifteen years later, getting into Peru or Mexico is no different from getting into the USA. I take this to be an encouraging sign of the development of their civil societies. Lima is a gastronomic capital. We were there for three days and every meal we ate was outstanding. Peru is blessed with high-quality ingredients and excellent chefs whose influences are both local and Asian. Apparently, there are 35 weather systems on the planet and Peru has 28 of them, hence its immense variety of food. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
